Yes, it’s the time of year to think and plan and be grateful for the good things in life. And 2025 will arrive before we know it! To help me reflect, and plan for next year, I included a short poll in my recent celebratory post, ‘Five Hundred Friends!’ I appreciate each and every one of you who took the time to respond. With your answers in mind I have the guidance I need to make some changes to develop Place Writing. The poll results suggest that you like being connected with each other in this community, that you love being informed, but what you want, really really want, is to be inspired. So that’s the challenge!
What will Place Writing look like in 2025?
I’ll be writing more about the craft of place writing and intersperse short posts with occasional longer ones. And there’ll be writing tips and prompts; I’ll let you know when these are ready—they’ll be structured and organised.
You’ll all continue to receive my fortnightly posts, PLUS:
a) I’ll record and publish fortnightly, (in alternate weeks to the written posts), new Video Shorts. These will be just a few minutes long and provide personal glimpses into my thinking and doing, and I’ll be sharing my writerly ups and downs.
b) I’ll prepare a series of place writing prompts for those of you who would like to join me, and we can develop our writing practice. Even if we’re working at a distance in geographical terms, it’s easier and more fun when you work on the same things together and then compare notes.
Paywall
I think one of the big ‘problems’ with paid subscriptions is monthly fees. Monthly contributions (and tip jars) are, of course, pertinent, and many subscribers prefer this more flexible means of paying to say ‘I like and support what you do’. Unfortunately, monthly subscriptions can be withdrawn without notice and, consequently, they don’t offer financial security to authors.
Personally, when I pay to subscribe, I pay the annual amount because first, I’m a sucker for a bargain and it’s usually cheaper, and second, I think an annual subscription demonstrates a noteworthy and significant level support and commitment to the author and their work. Many authors here depend on writing income to pay the bills and I think that, at least for a year, the biggest gift we can give is an annual subscription.
My regular posts will continue to be free but, you’ll see, I’ve revised the subscription fees in light of providing these extra benefits.
AND, right now, I’m making the annual subscription fee to Place Writing really attractive. The Christmas train is here! Jump on board.
New Year’s Day Invitation
Friends, between us we’ve made this corner of Substack a very special place, it’s nurturing and creatively challenging. Cheers to you!
Video Shorts start on New Year’s Day!
In the meantime, I wish you a wonderfully happy and healthy festive season, however you celebrate, and I look forward to seeing you very soon.
