Fascinating, and really helpful. I wrote a dystopian imagining during the Autumn months and I am about to embark on a second draft ... I know little of the craft of writing, but I do love spilling words onto blank pages. I realise, reading this, that the Zone at the heart of the tale would merit way more lingering detail as a basis for steering the story in the direction it needs to go in. I shall be saving this post and re-reading it plenty as I go through the editing process. Thank you. Barrie

Hi Barrie, thank you for commenting and I'm glad this post has prompted further thoughts for your next round of editing. I hope the Zone in your story develops into an interesting place and that you'll enjoy fleshing out the details.

Love this, Yasmin!

Thank you so much for this!

I've always struggled with place writing.

I find it exhausting having to add that much detail, so sometimes, I avoid it completely and focus on the characters.

But now I see just how important it is!

I'll definitely give it another try. And another, and another!

Thank you Phebe. I'm glad that you are motivated to consider place in your writing, but don't let it exhaust you. Enjoy it.
