Author Library

Use this Library to find inspiration from established writers and new voices.

Have your notebook open while you read them. Analyse their approach to writing.

Place Writing is a relatively new genre and many writers do not identify themselves as place writers. However, there’s a considerable body of writing that could be categorised as such and in this Library, (under continuous development), I’m curating a resource for you.

Draw up your own reading list—there are links for you to click through and subscribe. You’ll find writers who are producing exciting work right now in this genre.

On Substack…

Justin S Bailey

Justin, an anthropologist, archaeologist, and author, lives in Indiana, USA. His Substack, ‘Those Who Wander’, explores the landscape and its history through the lens of walking, hiking, and travel. In the ‘Debates’ column, Justin invites you to comment on pertinent questions of our time.

An Anthropology of Wandering: How Adventure Can Alleviate a Fearful Culture is Justin’s first book—a first-person account of backpacking the Appalachian Trail. En route, Justin addresses questions about the meaning of adventure, and how society approaches risk and fear.

Bee Lilyjones

Bee describes herself as a naturalist, community archivist, and accidental historian. Her Substack, ‘Before We Leave with Bee Lilyjones and Friends’, is mostly a collection of essays or extracts from her book about the process of making a community archive in the village where she lives in Cumbria. Each post is worth your time.

There’s a sense of nostalgia and urgency about Bee’s writing because she will soon be leaving this place, her home for many years, for another that lies hundreds of miles south. So she is documenting the history of place, and researching archives for stories that she will leave as a community resource—see her website.
